Largest full operation fast charging network for e-bus fleet in Europe

Eindhoven operates the largest full-operation bus project in Europe. Heliox provides the charging infrastructure comprising depot charging @ 30 kW and opportunity charging @ 300 kW, using roof-mounted pantographs.

The challenge to the industry was clear; carry out the entire public transport of the region with electric buses. Transdev/Connexxion, the public transport operator in this region, was committed to electrifying its entire bus fleet in Eindhoven. The goal was to charge 43x 18 m articulated e-buses, while keeping the highest up-time and overall minimal adjustments to the bus operation. The region was ready to turn to electric buses and Heliox is proud to have been the charging infrastructure partner to help reduce their public transport carbon footprint.  A project with such a wide scope and magnitude for an e-bus infrastructure implementation, had not been done anywhere in Europe before. 


Heliox fast charging equipment was strategically delivered in the bus depot to create the most efficient and cost-effective solution for a project of this scale. Heliox supplied a fast charging system that solely relies on the Bus-Up solution. Both opportunity and overnight chargers automatically communicate with the buses through a roof-mounted pantograph creating a robust and a time-efficient charging system. For overnight charging Heliox provided 12 Heliox FAST DC 2x30 kW chargers with 24 individual charging points. The 10 Heliox OC 300 kW  chargers  automatically downgrade to 50 kW systems for extra costs savings during night and carry a SMART Switch. SMART Switch, Heliox's latest innovation, was implemented to maximize charging intervals. Using the SMART Switch allows to charge two buses with one charger, while automatically switching from the fullest to the emptier bus. This type of charging is beneficial for the customer as it is cost efficient and provides an optimal total cost of ownership (TCO). As all charging takes place at the depot, the customer has a compact solution for its infrastructure, while ensuring the buses are in regular operation. Additionally, Heliox has also provided 2 Heliox FAST DC 25 kW mobile chargers at the depot for maintenance and service use. 


This project was the very first large-scale  implementation in Europe and deployed a total of 43 electric VDL buses. The implementation and commissioning of this project were completed in a short timeframe of 3 months. Based on the bus battery capacity, the available energy supply and transport strategy, Heliox developed an infrastructure that is future-proof. The Eindhoven project has been regarded as the largest electric public transport bus fleet in Europe and the world's largest opportunity charged fleet between 2016-2018. This project is a proven example that electric buses ensure high up-times and maximum availability of the bus fleet.  Hermes director Juul van Hout quoted: "For me, this is the best implementation ever." The Eindhoven site is prepared for an expansion of 120 extra e-buses in 2020 and has been a well-founded basis for Connexxion to deploy 100 electric buses in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport area in 2018.
