Powering Scandinavia’s biggest e-bus project

Heliox’s Fast Charge systems support one of Europe’s largest e-bus operations as the city phases out fossil fuel vehicles. With Oslo’s ambitious target for zero emissions by 2028, Heliox was tasked with implementing the large-scale project in less than four months.

40 Buses 9 MW Oslo, Norway 5 Months

Oslo’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and phase out fossil fuel vehicles by 2028 meant transport in its capital city needed to be addressed. Unibuss, one of the biggest operators in Norway, converted its entire fleet of 40 buses to battery electric buses. In less than 4 months, with a total of 115 electric bus lines, Oslo was to become home to Europe’s largest electric bus operation. However, the limited available space challenged Heliox to think beyond usual installations to provide a suitable and efficient charging solution.

Heliox supplied and installed a total of 40 Heliox fast-charging stations in Oslo to power the fleet of 40 all-electric buses. Portals, also supplied and installed by Heliox were an appropriate space-saving solution. The e-buses automatically connect to the chargers and are compatible with Bus-Up and the CCS plug-in options. The Bus-Up solution utilizes a roof-mounted pantograph, an interoperable and open interface for fast charging. It’s a reliable and robust system that uses a pantograph mounted on the bus, and includes remote management to ensure high up-time throughout the operation. The installation included 12 Heliox OC 300 kW chargers, powerful chargers that can recharge the e-bus battery in just 2-5 minutes. An additional 28 Heliox FAST DC 50 kW chargers were also installed, ten of which charge via a CCS plug-in solution that offers a plug&play option so drivers only need to connect the charger to the vehicle and the charging process starts immediately. Past experience has shown these are trustworthy systems for the customer.

As European Green Capital 2019, Oslo was keen to highlight the city’s green urban development with environmentally friendly public transport using battery electric buses. Heliox provided a charging infrastructure that not only ensured the fleet was quickly operational but also provided the possibility to upgrade in the future, using the existing 300 kW chargers. Øystein Svendsen, Managing Director Unibuss, “We are pleased we chose to work with Heliox, such a well-recognized supplier of charging infrastructure technology.” Heliox Director Automotive, Bob Bouhuijs is proud Heliox is supporting Norway in reaching its carbon neutral target. “It’s an important milestone on the way towards a sustainable public transport infrastructure and we’re proud to work with Unibuss and push the limits of e-mobility, creating a more climate friendly for future generations.”
