Challenge

The technical requirements included 56 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro busses to charge reliably and efficiently, with the potential to increase power capacity should the busses be increased. However the project was not a simple charging solution alone, rather a turnkey project aimed at creating large-scale charging infrastructure for an entirely e-mobility powered public transportation system.

Solution

Heliox would provide the charging infrastructure and would be responsible for the electrical installation and medium voltage grid connection. Heliox powers a total of 6.3MW in the city of Wiesbaden with 56 chargers.Charging dispensers have been installed at regular intervals in between columns, to make charging plug and play easy.

Given that the space is restricted, the charging pillars' enclosures have been adapted to fit narrow access at the depot, with simplified access to CCS chargers by moving the interface and the control button to the front of the pillars.

The scope of Heliox’s contract stretches further than the delivery of the Overnight Chargers. It included full installation and service: charging stations, medium voltage connection and a full service and maintenance contract.

The construction work started at the end of 2019, the first chargers were operational in 2020 with a full operationality in 2021. Heliox charging infrastructure would also be compatible with the Fleet management system used, which facilitates monitoring of busses and the charging infrastructure in order to enable smart charge management.
